Where Was God When?
I have been asked this question and I have read about precious people who have asked this very question. Where was God when I was beaten for years and had to hide it? Where was God when I was 5 years old and was raped repeatedly for years? I cried out to God for help, to make it stop, where was God? Where was God when…where was God when I needed Him to rescue me? I cried out and He never came? Why?
Silence is deafening and heavy after you are asked that question.
I believe God is there. I believe God’s heart is broken. I believe God shed tears at that very moment. What I believe, does not lighten or answer that question when you have lived that torment.
“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” (Psalms 34:18 NLT)
I believe that. The Lord is close! There it is! He was close! Why then did an innocent child continue to be raped for years? Why does that child grow to be angry and bitter and live without hope?
“I am sick at heart. How long, O LORD, until you restore me? Return, O LORD, and rescue me. Save me because of your unfailing love. I am worn out from sobbing. All night I flood my bed with weeping, drenching it with my tears. Go away, all you who do evil…” (Psalms 6:3, 4, 6 NLT)
Sin entered the world when the fruit was bitten and a barrier created.
God loves us so much He gives us the power to choose. Evil hates choice. Evil desires to destroy innocence and place a barrier between us and God. Evil attempts to dominate.
I believe God is always near and He is bigger. That statement doesn’t comfort the torment. I do know this:
“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book. My enemies will retreat when I call to you for help. This I know: God is on my side! For you have rescued me from death; you have kept my feet from slipping. So now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light.” (Psalms 56:8, 9, 13 NLT)
Here’s what else I believe. God works through people to accomplish His good will. God has people in place everywhere, every moment, to rescue and fight evil. So, when an innocent child is being raped and cries out for help, I believe that God has a rescue in place. God sends out the call to rescue and because we have a choice, some choose to do nothing when they are called. Some choose to look the other way. Some choose to be afraid. Some choose to be complacent. Some choose to walk across the road and around the cry for help and pretend they didn’t hear it. Some just choose no.
What if we all said yes and were His answer to the cry. What if we chose to be the answer to “where was God when?”
“The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is upon me, for the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed.” (Isaiah 61:1 NLT)
We need to commit to be His rescue as a warrior against injustice and tangibly for the broken hearted. God has called me to be a part of His mission, I’m saying yes! What about you?
I would love to never have to be asked “where was God when?” ever again.
